There’s a good early study of 3D hypertext maps by Poltrock et al from Boeing. Andreas Dieberger’s Information City is also pertinent. Of course, advanced in visualization and processing power matter.

Yes, my imagining this morning was spurred by a memory of an experience I had in the Duke DiVE where I had a virtual “magic wand” and could move about a thicket of connected nodes (at the time inventors in blue, patents in red, and companies in green). It was natural to sort through data in 3-D space. I recall tossing nodes over my shoulder to get them out of the way.
