Slow zooming compared to panning

Zooming is noticeably slower compared to panning. Zooming (two finger pinch gesture) makes the map with 20+ notes almost jump in discrete steps. Panning (two finger swipe gesture) is very smooth. I wonder why is that.

Zooming is much more computationally intensive, and it’s much less common than panning. In addition, a huge amount of effort has been devoted to panning performance in the map view.
