A Nod to Tinderbox: Resisting the Siren Call of Decorative Note-Taking

In an era where many note-taking apps are becoming increasingly focused on aesthetics and ‘decorative note-taking,’ I wanted to express my appreciation for Tinderbox. It has steadfastly remained a tool for thought, prioritizing substance over superficiality. While others chase visual trends, Tinderbox continues to provide a powerful, unique environment for exploring complex ideas. It’s a testament to a design philosophy that values deep thinking over pretty layouts. Thank you for staying true to your path.

I fully support this and couldn’t agree more! What I love most is the seamless integration of scripting and HTML export. Being able to quickly fire off a Light Code snippet to reorganise a plot thread and instantly generate a clean, navigable HTML page saves me countless hours. It allows me to experiment with different story-building frameworks, such as StoryGrid, Dramatica or even a custom schema that I have devised, without having to juggle multiple apps or lose track of connections. Thank you to @eastgate and the engaging community. It’s always a pleasure to interact, and your support is very much appreciated.

Thank you for the kind words, Gernot! I’m glad you appreciate the focus on substance. The scripting and export capabilities are indeed powerful for organizing complex thoughts. It’s great to be part of such a supportive community.

@NiranS Are you referring to the navigable HTML pages? You can either look into the framework I have provided with Writerbox, or watch the video of my conversation with @satikusala about the idea. However, I would be happy to give a demo and share my experience.

I can’t agree more. However, I will say, with a little effort, I’ve been able to make my Tinderboxes visually appealing to me, too. While some may consider Tinderbox’s defaults to be on the blander side, its customization capabilities make it incredibly fun to “tune” the UI to one’s own taste.

For example, I like the aesthetics of iA Writer, a Markdown editor. So, with a little trial-and-error, I was able to customize Tinderbox’s note editing environment to match iA Writer’s visual aesthetic, like so:

Thank you, @eastgate, for developing and supporting such a powerful and flexible tool for notes.

Could you share the settings that are behind this look for the text window?
