Actually, since v10.0. Tinderbox has this covered as Badges can use any of the thousands of icons in the system ‘SF Symbols’ font†. This was covered in aTbRef in the v10.0.0 release notes summary, but this suggestion reminds me the articles on Badges ought to cover this too (now on my to-do list!).
In v10.0.0+, browsing by name via the Badge picker search box, any matches show in the ‘symbols’ tab of the Badge browser, supplementing the symbol badges listed by default. System icons also allow for additional styling via a dot notation allowing results like this.
Note that the badge value string stored is as per the tooltip text shown, the ‘sf-’ indicating to Tinderbox that the symbol is called from the SF symbols font. Whilst you must use the prefix (e.g. is setting the value some other way) but do not use the ‘sf-’ prefix in the Badge picker search box or you get no matches.
For instance, try setting the Badge on a note to sf-rectangle.and.pencil.and.ellipsis
by copy/pasting that string direct to $Badge.
The range of possible symbols available via SF symbols is enormous and too many for Tinderbox to sensibly list on spec. So, whilst using a search term of ‘star’ gets you SF Symbols and other so-named badges:
Using ‘star.’ (note the trailing period) will get you only SF Symbols matches and derivatives of that stem:
The reason the former search show more items from SF Symbols is because the string ‘star.’ does not occur, e.g. as in `staroflife.circle’.
The is no viewer for SF Symbols in Tinderbox or indeed in macOS. You can either download install the Apple Developer app “SF Symbols beta” (download from here) or use an online viewer like Free Icons for Apps, Browser Extensions, and Websites‡.
†. The ‘SF’ stands for ‘San Francisco’, the name of a current macOS font used for the OS UI, menus, etc. The font has shipped as part of macOS since macOS 11. Successive OS releases have increased the range of symbols available.
‡. Not an endorsement, just something I found by brief web search—there will be others.
