Setting up a new MacBook. Not at all being redundant, I have Google Drive for Desktop, DropBox, and iCloud. I am currently using DropBox, but I was reading that Google Drive may have better versioning capabilities. What are others using?
iCloud works fine for me generally, for a few reasons:
pretty reliable sync
I’m already paying for cloud storage for iPhoto library etc. and just $3 per month gives me 200gb with unlimited transfer
iCloud and Time Machine taken together are a solid backup/repo solution for most individual use scenarios
works invisibly and within MacOS, so things like disk repair etc work well
The only caveat is that once in a while, the iCloud Sync itself may be delayed on my laptop; and there’s little I can do other than logout and back in or restart to get it unclogged. And you need to keep an eye on the little clock icon next to the iCould drive to check when your most recent update occurred.
Another issue I have seen recently with iCloud is incorrect syncing with a Numbers spreadsheet when using the Numbers iOS app. Currently looking into that.
There are several 3rd party repo solutions out there that work seamlessly with MacOS, iOS, Windows and so on- of these, I can recommend Sync.com.
Haven’t considered Github. Haven’t had a problem with DropBox, but my Google Drive is HIPAA compliant and not scanned (I know, if Google is to be believed). I’ve had occasional challenges with iCloud taking a long time to update. In true TinderBoxer fashion, a range of replies so far, curious if others have thoughts.
