Installing Tinderbox 11

My first version was 10; I am trying to now switch to version 11. I downloaded v11 and both versions are now in my applications folder.

I was told yesterday to open and import my document into v11 which I did via File>Open Recent. My document was in the list and I opened it in v11. However, it is not the version of the file I was working with yesterday; it is the version previous to yesterday’s work. I did a save on my v10 document and closed it thinking that perhaps would update v11; it did not.

Please advise. TIA

I can’t say this often enough, you are not ‘importing’ a document into the app! You are simply opening it in the app.

No, Open Recent only lists the (up to 30) last opened TBX on that major version. So v11.0.1 will list documents opening in v11.0.0. But v11.x versions will not list items last opened in v10.x.

Now v11 is installed you should delete the v10 app as (apart from exports/testers) you should ideally only have one version installed.

Recalling there is no ‘import’ of document, in v11 you will need to open your documents once from their stored locations (where you chose to save them) after which they (or the last 30 used) will be listed in the recently used menu list. Once in the latter you can use that to open documents and save having to navigate to the stored location.

This is completely standard. It works like every other Macintosh application. It’s worked like this for decades.

you could also select/highlight your document in the Finder and do a Command-i . In the opened window, under Open with: select Tinderbox 11.

Forgive me! I am TRYING TO OPEN IT IN THE APP!!! There. Is that better? You clearly understood my intent and meaning. Perhaps you could dredge up just a pinch of GRACE and UNDERSTANDING for someone who doesn’t inhabit your world! Tinderbox has a rep in the “real world” and I can see why. Gosh… the sales you could make if you could simply understand what normal people are asking in THEIR best way, translate it into your geek-speak, then answer in a way they could understand without demanding THEY capitulate to a language they SIMPLY DON”T KNOW!

We KNOW this app comes with a big ask. I KNOW it is above my ability and experience, YET I laid down my almost $500 to be here - my choice, I know that too. Why? Because given my experience of Twig I think it’s what I need. But I am NOT a programmer! I’m just an ordinary customer HOPING for some help with an appreciation of the fact that this is foreign to me!

As it is clear I am not up to your standards, Mark, and as I don’t appreciate being repeatedly scolded like a 5 year old, perhaps it is best if you ignore it when I need help here and let someone else come to my assistance. I appreciate your efforts and assistance but I am CLEARLY taxing yours.

Understood. I appreciated you telling me this yesterday. And I know you understood my intent in telling you my previous experience with updating apps. I will work on learning a new process here.

Many thanks.

Please understand, this is a user-to-user forum and not Eastgate technical support. The developer does occasionally post here but that is quite normal for user to user forums. Thus flaming people here is just ragging on fellow users giving up their free time to help you … for free. No one is selling here, just contributing collective knowledge, for free to their fellow users. If you need more direct support, the formal support is via email at tinderbox@eastgate.com.

I understand you don’t want my help, so I’ll step back and let others take over. I hope that enables you are able to get past your current problems. The community here generally manages to get people’s problem’s sorted out. Best wishes

When someone suggests that you open a Macintosh document in the app, what they are suggesting is that you:

  1. Open the application.
  2. Choose Open… from the File menu.
  3. Select the document you with to open
  4. Press the Open button

This has been common to all document-based Macintosh applications from the very beginning. It is how MacPaint and MacWrite worked. On forums like this, we typically use the shorthand “Open the document” because most people know this or, if they do not, they alert us (“I just switched from Windows”).

I wonder, though I hesitate to suggest it, whether a general overview of the Macintosh might be a good thing for you. Maybe something from https://www.takecontrolbooks.com would help? (I’d welcome suggestions from bystanders; I’m way out of date.). It looks like MacVince has some nice YouTube tutorials, too.

Thank you. Do I now move Tinderbox 10 to the trash?

Yes, go ahead. We can get you copies of old versions in the event you need them.

Thank you.
