In this Tinderbox Meetup, we explored how AI is transforming note-taking into something much larger: a form of cognitive infrastructure that shapes how we think, remember, reason, and create. Beginning with practical discussions of AI agents and Tinderbox workflows, the conversation expanded into questions of knowledge management, cultural perspectives on thinking, digital sovereignty, creativity, education, and the long-term implications of outsourcing cognition to AI. We debated whether AI is merely a tool or an advisor, how to preserve human judgment in an AI-rich world, and what responsibilities we have in designing systems that augment rather than diminish human agency.

  • AI workflows: Explored how multiple AI agents can collaborate on specialized tasks while preserving context and improving productivity. Beyond note-taking: Discussed moving from individual notes toward structured “cognitive infrastructure” that supports thinking, reasoning, and long-term knowledge development.
  • Cultural perspectives: Examined how Western approaches to knowledge management differ from Eastern traditions, questioning whether current “tools for thought” are too narrowly conceived.
  • AI as tool or advisor: Debated whether AI should be viewed as a passive tool or as an active advisor that learns from and increasingly influences its users.
  • Cognitive sovereignty: Considered the risks of outsourcing memory, reasoning, and personal knowledge to cloud-based AI platforms and the importance of owning one’s digital infrastructure.
  • Human creativity and learning: Reflected on how AI affects writing, education, apprenticeship, and the development of reasoning, imagination, and reflective thinking.
  • The future of work and society: Explored how AI may reshape professions, institutional knowledge, economic structures, and what it means to remain intellectually independent in an AI-driven world.
