In this Tinderbox meetup, we explored how Tinderbox, AI, and other personal knowledge management tools can work together as a human-centered knowledge system. I demonstrated the IdP 5Cs Clipper™, a browser extension Dr. Michael Becker (@satikusala) is developing to support the first two Cs of the 5Cs of Knowledge Management™: Collection and Curation. The Clipper captures and semantically highlights web content and sends it—with context, metadata, citations, and provenance—to Tinderbox, Obsidian, Zotero, AI twins, and other knowledge repositories.

Our discussion moved beyond the tool itself to a larger question: How should we use AI to augment rather than replace human thinking?

Five key takeaways emerged:

  1. Build a knowledge ecosystem, not a single-tool solution. We discussed using different tools for what they do best—Tinderbox for thinking and synthesis, Obsidian and DEVONthink for persistent knowledge, Zotero for references, AI twins for contextual intelligence, and AI to connect and automate the workflow.
  2. Use AI to reduce friction, not eliminate thinking. AI can handle extraction, formatting, transformation, configuration, and other repetitive work while we retain responsibility for interpretation, judgment, association, and synthesis.
  3. Use the 5Cs to organize the knowledge lifecycle. The IdP 5Cs Clipper™ demonstrates how Collection and Curation can feed the later stages of Creation, Collaboration, and Contribution.
  4. Keep knowledge portable and traceable. Rather than locking knowledge into one application, we discussed moving it among tools while preserving its context, metadata, citations, and provenance.
  5. Use Tinderbox as a thinking environment in the age of AI. Tinderbox’s maps, outlines, links, attributes, agents, and views provide a powerful environment for working with curated knowledge. AI can help operate the machinery around that knowledge while leaving the essential acts of thinking and sensemaking to us.

The larger theme was a shift from using isolated applications toward building a human-centered knowledge ecosystem: AI reduces friction, our tools help us collect, structure, connect, and preserve knowledge, and we remain responsible for turning that knowledge into understanding and action.
