In this Tinderbox Meetup, we had an epic end-to-end review of Tinderbox.
First, we kicked off the meetup reminding everyone of Winter Fest 2024, the bi-annual discount promotion where you can get deep discounts on leading tools for thought software and experiences—we highlighted a few programs, including Peakto (photo management), Avalance (photo catalog migration), Take Control of Books (expert advice from leading tech authors), as well as Becker’s Tinderbox 101 Cohort #2 kicking off on January 10, 2025.
Remember Schedule Change: We’ll kick 2025 off with the first TBX meetup on Saturday, Jan. 4 and then will keep to the every other Saturday and Sunday schedule. Also, we have the APAC TBX meetup on January 3 at 4:00 PM PST/Jan. 4, 9:00 AM JSP—APAC meetups will be held first Friday of every month.
We then worked on setting the agenda for the call.
We landed on Becker providing a comprehensive end-to-end example of “Thinking & Publishing in Outline View—The End-to-End Experience." We agreed that we’d do Part 2 of the Win Treese project/class management on Jan. 4. See Part 1.
Thinking & Publishing in Outline View—The End-to-End Experience
In this demo, Becker demonstrated how he created a client report by brainstorming concepts and issues in note names and then proceeded to incrementally formalize the report until it was published. Over the course of the meetup, he,
- brainstormed taking notes in Outline View,
- organized these notes into containers (inc. adding prototypes, badges, user-generated attributes—a few of sets and a boolean),
- used this organization to help facilitate thinking and the authoring of summaries,
- used a $DisplayExpression to help visually categorize the notes (qualitative data analysis) and the use of an $OnVisit stamp to generate the displayed expression for processor and workflow optimization automatically,
- created a template to
- visually show the $Category in the output for selected notes,
- dynamically set the HTML heading tags with action code in the templates,
- modify the appearance with CSS,
- create a bulleted list of children from select notes (manage the output with a few conditionals in the export code)
- publish the work, e.g., copy and paste the output into a Google Doc
Addressed a few of Win’s Questions
Becker demonstrated how to,
- how to use agents to create an index (e.g., topics, terms, etc.) in an output
- strategies for creating visual affordances on a note in outline view, including:
- $DisplayedExpression
- $Badgets
- $OutlineBackground Color
- $Flags
- $Color
