In this Tinderbox meetup, we had an in-depth discussion around writing tools and how Tinderbox can be—depending on your reaction to convenience, comfort, and conformance (skip to the end for a discussion on this)—a long-term productive environment for all kinds of writing and thinking.

We kicked off the meeting with @eastgate, explaining the pros and cons of web apps (like Obsidian) and native apps (like Tinderbox).

@_Bill explains how he is going to start looking at Tinderbox as the space for his writing. He is ready to make the leap. He was open about his confusion about writing in Tinderbox and “exporting” out of Tinderbox with tools like Quatro and Pandoc. This led us down the path to list and how different markup/markdown parsers (e.g., Tinderbox, CommonMark, Markdown, Quatro, Pandoc) handle the formatting of lists and text. Following this discussion, we then went through a step-by-step demo of building out a template that would enable you to output a basic first-level (i.e., children only) bullet list from a note’s children. This list could include just the names or of the child notes or their text tool. In the real-time review, we reviewed export code (include, if conditions), .each() operator, variables, action code conditionals, and more. In other words, we had a foundational discussion on how templates work in Tinderbox.

We concluded the session with Becker (@satikusala) demonstrating an applet he is building to help teachers and project managers dynamically create date-based lecture notes or project notes that account for holidays, breaks, finals, weeks, and events (e.g., class) numbering. Becker will continue to develop this work and eventually produce a course around it.
