Using Tinderbox for rapid prototyping: helping my mom in hospice

Back in 2021, my mom had a major stroke that took out her ability to speak. Well, she could speak, but getting the words out was exhausting. So, I made a paper-based tool to help her communicate.

I used Tinderbox to collect and sort the care tasks and possible requests from my family and cluster them by importance. While this is a most primitive use of the tool, it was also urgent and important.

While I don’t write about actually using TB in the article, I thought you may appreciate the design thinking that went into this, and how Tinderbox helped find the emerging patterns: The design decisions - The Voiceboard Project

Mom passed not long after I wrote this article. It’s a normal part of life, and I can tell you that she was very proud to have something like this created just for her. I promised I would share it, and have customized the Voiceboard for others with some success. Eventually, I hope to create a self-serve version.

This is wonderful, and as a son with a mother, this bit hits home:

There’s virtuosity and music, and this forum is often about the former, which is fine, but what you made for your mom seems like music and not primitive at all. Thanks for sharing.
